Microservices Migration: A Reality Check for Mid-Sized Teams
I’ve been having conversations with development teams lately about microservices, and I keep hearing the same pattern: excitement about the architecture, followed by sobering reality when the migration begins. Last month, I sat down with a friend leading a 40-person engineering team who was six months into breaking apart their monolith. The look on his face told me everything.
“We thought we’d be shipping faster by now,” he said. “Instead, we’re debugging network timeouts and arguing about API contracts.”
This isn’t an isolated story. The microservices architecture has real benefits, but the gap between theory and practice is wider than most blog posts admit.
The Promise vs. The Practice
The sales pitch for microservices is compelling: independent deployability, technology diversity, team autonomy, better scalability. For companies like Netflix or Uber operating at massive scale with hundreds of engineers, these benefits are real and necessary.
But here’s what they don’t tell you in the conference talks: microservices introduce distributed systems complexity from day one. That monolith you’re replacing had problems, sure, but at least you could debug it with a single IDE session and a breakpoint. Now you need distributed tracing, service meshes, and a deep understanding of network partitions.
I recently helped a team assess their migration strategy, and when we mapped out their planned service boundaries, we counted 23 inter-service calls to complete their most common user workflow. Their monolith did this in one database transaction. The performance implications alone were concerning.
When Microservices Actually Make Sense
There are legitimate reasons to adopt microservices, but “because everyone else is doing it” isn’t one of them. The architecture makes sense when you have clear organizational boundaries that map to service boundaries, when different parts of your system genuinely need different scaling characteristics, or when you’ve outgrown what a well-structured monolith can handle.
One company I know split their analytics pipeline into a separate service, and it made perfect sense. The pipeline had completely different performance requirements, ran on a different schedule, and was maintained by a different team. That’s a textbook case for service separation.
What doesn’t make sense is splitting a tightly coupled domain into services just because you read it’s “best practice.” If your checkout service needs to call your inventory service, which calls your pricing service, which calls your promotion service, you haven’t created independence—you’ve created a distributed monolith with all the downsides of microservices and none of the benefits.
The .NET Perspective
For teams working in the .NET ecosystem, the conversation gets interesting. The platform has excellent support for building microservices with tools like ASP.NET Core, gRPC, and Dapr. But it also has incredible tooling for building modular monoliths that give you many of the same organizational benefits without the distributed systems tax.
I’ve seen teams successfully use bounded contexts within a single .NET application, with clear module boundaries enforced through namespace organization and dependency rules. They got team autonomy and clear separation of concerns without needing Kubernetes expertise. When they eventually did need to extract a service, the clean boundaries made it straightforward.

What I’d Do Differently
If I were starting a new project today with a team under 50 developers, I’d build a modular monolith first. I’d invest heavily in clear module boundaries, I’d make sure different parts of the system could evolve independently within the monolith, and I’d design my data access layer to make eventual service extraction possible if needed.
I’d also be honest about operational readiness. Microservices require investment in observability, deployment automation, and incident response that monoliths don’t. If your current deployment process involves manual steps or you don’t have centralized logging, fix those problems first before adding distributed systems complexity.
The industry has swung toward microservices as a default, but I’m seeing signs of a correction. Teams are rediscovering that a well-architected modolith can scale surprisingly far, both technically and organizationally.
The Real Question
The question isn’t “should we use microservices?” It’s “what problems are we actually trying to solve?” If your answer is team autonomy, maybe you need clearer module boundaries and better API contracts within your monolith. If it’s deployment independence, maybe you need better feature flags and deployment automation. If it’s scale, maybe you need database optimization and caching.
Microservices might still be the answer, but only after you’re clear about the question. And if you do go down that path, do it with eyes wide open about the operational complexity you’re signing up for. The architecture can work beautifully, but it demands expertise and tooling that takes time to develop.
